SANTA MONICA CITY HALL EAST
SANTA MONICA

An extension of Santa Monica’s historic city hall, City Hall East was designed to meet the certification requirements of the Living Building Challenge (LBC), surpassing the highest LEED standards. It’s the first project of its scale in California to convert rainwater to potable water and the first to feature compostable toilets. With onsite infiltration fields, a cistern and water treatment, the building is net positive for water, while sunlight, natural ventilation and radiant floor flabs reduce energy demand. As project architect, MAAM’s Mariam Mojdehi collaborated with the engineering team at Buro Happold to merge the innovative technologies with the pragmatic concerns of a multi-faceted institution without sacrificing aesthetics while working under a tight budget.
